Educationalist
As the country grows and
more people are beginning to look to the business world in order to
increase their earning capacities, the role of the adult educator has
becomes more important as a human resource. The public is aware that a
matriculation certificate is no longer sufficient to ensure employment or
a good salary and they are looking for ways in which to improve these
chances by increasing not only their knowledge, but their ability to learn
and practice new skills.
There are four major fields in which an adult educator can work:
* Professional Development
Courses are generally offered to the public in the evenings or on weekends
in order to teach a new approach to a particular subject or subjects,
present information about the latest developments or legislation or simply
to review known subjects which can be given a different approach due to
sophisticated technology or new facts. Nurses, health workers, processors,
sales personnel and engineers are among those who attend these courses.
You would have to be an expert in a particular area and able to teach
skills or new approaches. If you are an engineer, you might be called upon
to teach your colleagues what you have learned about computed-aided
designs and draughting. If you are a top-class salesperson, you might have
to teach others your skills and the secret of your success. Large
organisations often have training departments for this purpose.
* Basic Adult Education and Further Study
Adults often wish to add to and improve on their school-leaving or
tertiary qualifications and they attend these classes. Professional
institutes, business colleges, universities, technical colleges and
sometimes private individuals offer full-time courses. Teachers of these
career-related courses have generally studied and achieved in the
disciplines taught while secondary school teachers help students to pass
Std 8 or 10. Primary school teachers often teach literacy.
* Skills Development
These range from classes aimed at personal growth and enrichment
(goal-setting, assertiveness or learning to play a musical instrument), to
skills needed for economic survival (home industry, gardening skills,
job-hunting) as well as interpersonal skills such as communication,
marriage or relationship enrichment. People in the caring profession such
as nurses, social workers and psychologists also run classes.
* Enrichment
These courses are taken by people who want to become more aware and learn
more about a specific topic.
