Editor
To be an editor is fairly
easy but to be an excellent editor requires intelligence, instinct, good
interpersonal and managerial skills, a deep knowledge of literature, art,
history, world events and the knowledge of how to make them interesting to
the readers. This is not a suitable career for someone who cannot handle
stress. You need to be the kind of person who can sit and watch others
panic while you map out a plan and a solution to the problem or problems.
It is a very exciting, stimulating and enjoyable profession for anyone who
enjoys people and observing their behaviour.
There are a few major categories for editors:
* The daily newspapers and daily newscasts require someone who is really
on their toes and can recognise a newsworthy article instantly and use it
effectively. Within 24 hours, the editor must be able to organise a front
page or newscast that has everyone reaching for the paper or intent on
listening to the radio or watching the television. Good headlines sell
papers and that is the aim of the game. Every newspaper depends on the
sale of advertising space as well as the sale of papers to pay the bills
and editors are always encouraging their staff to sell as many adverts as
possible.
Large newspaper concerns employ proof readers who check for spelling
mistakes, grammatical errors and so on, so your job would be to put the
newspaper together in as interesting a fashion as possible. This is an
extremely hectic job and requires a calm person who can think quickly and
make big decisions instantly. Some editors report that their main daily
task is to make order out of chaos. When there is a breaking news story,
for instance, the entire layout of the newspaper has to be changed to make
space for it and the Desk Top Publishers have to juggle the articles and
adverts within minutes of deadline times.
* Weekly and bi-weekly newspapers, magazines, television and radio shows:
The job description is very similar but a little less hectic. There is
more time for the editor to plan the layout and more time for articles to
be written, photographs to be taken and developed and deadlines are
usually met on time.
* Monthly or half-yearly editions of all of the above have editors who
plan ahead and collect the information, articles, photographs and so on.
These could be specialised editions which are concerned with new models of
cars, or fashion, music, literature, recipes or any subject that might
interest the readers and entice them to buy the magazine.
* Book editors specialise in editing books for publication.
* Television and Radio: Each show has to be edited.
