Dress designer
You would have to be
creative, practical, have drawing skills, communicate well, have a sound
understanding of all marketing avenues, the fashion world and other
business activities. Friendliness and tact are very important when dealing
with clients and staff.
This career is concerned with the design of clothing in response to a
recognised need or to improve existing products or produce new products.
People are known for their desire for more modern, better and exciting
products like new shapes and colours. Your main concern would be with the
overall conceptualisation, interaction with products and the design of
their appearance and you would apply your creativity and technological
expertise in designing articles that are functional but satisfy the
wearer's feeling for aesthetics.
There are two major fields in the clothing industry - the one is concerned
with mass-production and the other with more personalised items of
clothing for a select range of buyers.
In the case of mass-production, you would first research the market, study
the fashion trends and design a range of clothing which you would hope
would suit all tastes or as many potential buyers as possible. After
cutting a pattern, it would be assembled and examined for possible faults.
If it proved to be satisfactory, templates of the pattern would be cut and
given to the clothing cutter. The main factors which would have to be
considered would be:
* Function
* Appearance
* Cost
* Marketing strategies and competitiveness with other products
Technical specifications have to be produced plus estimated costs and
restrictions on the design. After the brief has been prepared, you would
work on the actual design by making sketches, models and draughts using
drawings and work within the confines of the brief, available technology
and the client's marketing plan. You would then present your plan to your
client for approval and continue to prepare final specifications and
drawings for the production of the article if he expresses his approval.
