Draughtsman
You would need a flair for
drawing, the ability to translate concepts, be able to visualise three
dimensionally and accurately, have good hand skills, good eyesight,
patience, an eye for detail, and be computer literate. In the old days,
all draughting was done by hand but nowadays, computers make life much
easier for everyone.
The career is an exciting one because there are about 24 different
disciplines, among which are architecture, mechanical, civil and
structural engineering, piping, town planning and mine surveying. Each
field requires slightly different skills. Your job would be to transform
the ideas of the engineer or architect into a drawing on paper with the
aid of a computer or your drawing board.
* Architectural draughtsmen draw plans for buildings according to
specifications and so you would need an extensive knowledge of building
construction before you could understand the plans.
* Mechanical engineering draughtsmen have to sketch plans for all kinds of
machines, engines, and mechanical components.
* Structural engineering draughtsmen draw the designs for towers and
trestles and steel frames.
* Town and regional planning draughtsmen prepare maps and diagrams and
construct models for use in planning schemes.
* Mining draughtsmen draw plans of cross sections of a mine's underground
areas and plans used for improving safety in mines.
