Doctor
You do not need to be a
genius in order to become a good doctor but you do need to be determined
to succeed. There is a wealth of information and facts which would have to
be assimilated by your brain even before you became a second-year medical
student. It is often said that a well educated monkey can make it through
first-year but that second-year weeds out the weak and third-year kills
off the softies.
In the first year at medical school, students are still imagining
themselves as potential Emergency Room film stars in the making who need
only to learn how to look like doctors for everyone to begin to take them
seriously and allow them to act like real doctors with real
responsibilities.
There would be very little time for parties in the first few years of
university if you wished to survive and be allowed to continue your
studies. First year students usually report that they were shocked not
only by the work load but by the fact that they were generally left to
their own devices and no high school prefect or principal bothered to egg
them on or chastise them when they did not pitch up for classes. If you
are to make it as a doctor, you would really have to put your shoulder to
the wheel and study harder than you have ever studied before.
Established doctors often mention that their first sight of blood, gore,
vomit or burns nearly put them off continuing as medical students but they
also agree that, with a bit of effort, they all managed to overcome this
and were able to look more objectively on sights that would make another
faint. They also talk, with a special light in their eyes, of their first
baby - almost as if they themselves had personally given birth. Not every
student finds surgery fascinating, there are some who wish to graduate to
a more general practice; some who enjoy the excitement of emergency work,
some wish to become specialists like paediatricians, gynaecologists and
the like.
Some want to be involved only with matters concerning the skin, heart,
lungs etc. There are many choices available and if office hours appeal to
you, you can forge your destiny in that direction.
There are no specific types of people who enter the medical profession.
All you need is a burning desire to become a doctor and the will to carry
out the steps that will lead you to the fulfilment and achievement of your
dream.
All specialists have to first qualify as doctors before they can choose to
enter a specific field such as Orthopaedic Surgeon, Paediatrician and so
on.
