Dentist
Dexterity is one of the
most important talents needed for this profession as delicate work has to
be done quickly, accurately and without pain to the patient. You would
have to have good eyesight, good hand control, be able to concentrate on
the job in hand. Because teeth are part of the general appearance of
people, if you have an aesthetic ability to judge what would be beneficial
to the patient, you would add substantially to your reputation as a good
dentist.
The welfare of your patient's mouth and teeth would be one of your
priorities so you would have to act responsibly and be capable of making
rational decisions that gain the respect and confidence of your patients.
Most of your working hours would be spent indoors with patients - usually
in your own private rooms or in the consulting rooms of a hospital or
clinic. As the work of a dentist is primarily preventive, much of this
time would be concerned with yearly checkups and with the advising of
patients on how to combat tooth decay.
A dentist usually has a receptionist and/or an assistant who is a nurse or
a trained dental assistant. Modern dentists now work from a sitting
position and no longer stand all day which makes their work a little
easier on their bodies. You would probably work in close co-operation with
medical doctors, dental specialists, technicians, therapists and oral
hygienists and be asked to give lectures to local schools on the
prevention of tooth decay. When braces, plates, crowns etc. were required,
you would be working closely with the technicians.
The dentist in government services has a wide field of activity because he
renders a health service to the community as a whole. The environment on
the whole is hygienic, pleasant and interesting.
