Decorator
This career requires a
definite artistic talent. It is never easy to choose furnishing, colour
and decorating aids for other people but this would be what you would be
doing - decorating people's homes, offices and all sorts of buildings,
from a baby's room to a theatre or a bathroom to a butchery. You should
possess a flair for colour, have initiative and a knowledge of technical
matters relating to bricks, tiles, undercoats, types of paint and so on.
As an interior decorator you would be using colours harmoniously and
effectively while working with architects, interior decorators and
designers and home owners to provide expert knowledge on the variation and
effect of colours and shades.
The job of interior decorator can be likened to that of a colour
consultant. Your clients would depend on you to make their homes and
offices as pleasant as possible and you might even be given the freedom to
plan the entire layout of the decor of a high-rise building. This would
include furnishings, curtains, paint and all the other colour touches
needed to enhance a room or a house.
If you were working with an architect and were given the task of
decorating a residential home, for example, you would receive a copy of
the blueprints and would consult with the owners of the property before
studying the structure and deciding on a plan of action. Factors which
would have to be taken into consideration would be the size of the rooms,
the desired effects and the cost of all the decorating materials. For
this, you would need a knowledge of all the wallpapers, paints and wall
and ceiling finishes that were available in order to procure the necessary
goods and decide on the quantity required. If furnishing were needed, you
would probably visit the retail or wholesale stores with the client and
suggest suitable furniture, curtaining, carpets and so on.
Your working conditions would usually involve quite a lot of travelling
and shopping as well as time spent in your office designing the decor.
This is a people-orientated career and so you would have to be prepared to
spend time with clients and be able change or alter your ideas until you
found solutions that were mutually satisfying to all parties.
