Construction Supervisor
You would need an in-depth
knowledge of building practices and procedures. The ideal foreman is
self-motivated, a practical problem-solver who enjoys the building
business and is able to motivate others to do their best. The safety of
the workers would also be your responsibility.
As computers are being used extensively, you would need to be computer
literate. Managers report that the process of building almost any sort of
structure is similar in some ways to creating a static form of life or
art. The specific plot of ground and detailed plans of the project have to
be examined thoroughly before excavations can be done and foundations
built.
Every structure begins as a designer's vision and is based on the needs of
the future inhabitants or the purpose for which it is intended. From the
time that the first brick is laid, an eye has to be kept on the growth of
the structure and every detail of this growth is noted and examined for
possible faults in the design.
Problems often occur and they have to be instantly corrected in order to
avoid an unwanted mutation of the original idea. The finished product
should evoke satisfaction and pride in both the designers and the
builders.
WHAT IS CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION?
Construction supervision covers a broad spectrum of responsibilities
associated with building. Essentially construction supervision is
management on mid-level in the building industry. In short the work of the
construction supervisor is to erect a building to the architect’s plans
and specifications within a given financial framework by applying
resources effectively.
WHAT DOES A CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISOR DO?
The construction supervisor is a specialised, technically orientated
manager. He is therefore an important link between top management of the
building firm on the one hand and the site personnel on the other hand. In
this say the responsibility for the erection of the building rests largely
with him, since he has to see to it that instructions of the architect are
correctly interpreted and executed by the site personnel. He must
therefore act as team leader and must co-ordinate all the work of the
contractors and subcontractors.
Of necessity he must know what each man does on the site as well as having
a thorough knowledge of construction methods and building materials.
The following tasks will be included in his work:
Tendering, purchasing, labour organisation, personnel management,
production and work management, safety of workers and site administration.
The work offers the opportunity of diversity and it is mostly out-of-doors
occupation.
QUALITIES OF THE CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISOR
The prospective construction supervisor must be a person with strong
leadership qualities who is able to associate easily with others as well
as work together with them. In addition he must have a strong technical
aptitude with the ability to tackle a task logically, and perseverance to
see through.
He must be prepared to work under pressure and regard his work as a
challenge. He must be able to link up with a wide spectrum of people, from
unskilled to professional.
