Confectioner
As a baker, you would have
to be reliable, clean, quick, be able to cope with repetitive work, exact
and able to work by yourself without too much supervision.
As a confectioner, usually one of a baker's added skills, you should be
inventive, have a steady hand and be able to invent or perfect your own
particular style of confectionery if you wished to make a name for
yourself. Delicate decorations require a steady hand and a little bit of
artistic ability. An interest in and fondness for baking and decorating is
essential as is the ability to do the same sort of work every day. As most
of your working hours would be spent on your feet, you should be
physically fit and able to work long hours if necessary - many bakeries
work through the night in order to supply the morning bread.
The kitchen is often air-conditioned for the comfort of the staff but
smaller firms tend to use electrical fans. Everything in the baking area
has to be spotlessly clean and health inspectors would make regular checks
to ensure that the environment is hygienic. If you were the head baker,
you would have to control and advise your fellow workers intelligently and
justly. Everything and everyone in the kitchen would be your
responsibility - down to the last pinch of salt or the work done by the
cleaning crew.
