A career as a programmer
is both demanding and rewarding. A Programmer controls how a computer
operates, they create tools for uses in order to manipulate and store
information.
A programmer in general terms, is a person who writes a program for
specific purposes or needs. Whether it is to create a virtual reality
game, a database system, control machinery or programme your companies
telephone system. A programmer is therefore a vital part of the every day
way of life.
There are various different programming languages available for the
programmer to use, namely; c/c++, Visual Basic, Delphi, Pascal, Cobol,
Java, Oracle and Informix to name but a few of the more popular languages.
With the continual growth of the IT industry, more and more capable
programmers are needed to make information technology accessible to the
average person. The more knowledgeable you are, the higher the income you
can expect for your efforts, so it’s also a lucrative profession. Since
many fields are expanding, programmers can expect work in many different
fields, from security to the internet.

Programmer
A programmer codes, tests, debugs and corrects program modules in the
development, support and maintenance of computer systems, thereby
providing for an effective programming function.

Junior Systems Programmer
This person maintains and develops operating systems software and assists
development staff in utilisation of related software. Liases with
suppliers about any problem areas. May also be responsible for ensuring
that disaster recovery procedures are in place and adhered to.

Analyst Programmer
An Analyst Programmer aids in system development, analysis, implementation
and enhancement. Designs specifications, undertakes program definition
work and interprets and executes test plans according to set standards.
4.
Systems Analyst
Their responsibilities include the effective evaluation of systems,
conduction of feasibility studies and product application of systems
within the organisation as well as new systems and database design. In
addition, incumbent carries out systems analyses, installation, security,
performance, user interfaces and training.
5.
Systems Software Programmer
The job of a systems software programmer may include writing sophisticated
software, but normally involves maintaining computer packages developed
overseas, and helping programmers locally with problems they cannot solve.
It is usually necessary to have a computer science qualification to
specialise in this field.
6.
Systems Administrator
Is responsible for the implementation of a new system as well as the
administration of the system, which includes control of user access, clear
batch jobs and daily General Ledger updates. Takes care of user training.
Future tasks will include implementation of more modules, implementing a
database and monitoring the upgrades.
