Community Worker
This is not a career for a
soft-hearted person who believes that a magic wand will make everything
better! You do need compassion for the plight of others and a love for
people as well as a deep desire to help them to cope with their losses and
pain and a genuine concern for their well being.
You should be able to handle stress and combat burnout and maintain close
relationships while providing personal support. The ability to work on
your own is vital and you would have to be good at documenting each case.
However, before you enter this profession, you must take a good hard look
at yourself. Do you take and follow advice from qualified, concerned
people? Many of the people with whom you would come into contact would
listen to you and then go and do just what they wanted to do in the first
place and this can become very frustrating to a social worker who has
spent a great deal time and trouble finding the best solution to the
problem. But as it is a human trait, it has to be accepted as part of the
job. When these self same people came unstuck and bumped their heads, you
would just have to repeat the process all over again and hope for the
best.
To successfully help someone is one of the most truly satisfying perks of
this profession. Your job would also involve placements of orphans in
foster homes or with adoptive parents who have long awaited a child that
they can care for and love. The handicapped and the elderly also
appreciate the services of a social worker who often becomes close friends
with them all.
You would have to liaise with employers, residential institutions, prison
authorities, government departments and community organisations in the
course of your duties.
* Community Workers deal with communities to identify and meet needs by
acting as catalysts in the towns. This includes feeding schemes, creches,
benefit funds, recreational facilities and housing schemes.
