Commercial Diver

Divers need a love and understanding of the sea; physical fitness; the ability to work calmly and in a hostile environment; mechanical aptitude, the ability to make quick decisions in strenuous situations; the ability to carry out instructions and take orders; trust in their colleagues and the ability to get on well with others.
You will have to be a Jack of all trades to make a success of this career which requires a wide range of skills.

The work involves:

* Shipping
The repair, survey and cleaning of vessels and the salvage of abandoned or sunken ships.

* Civil and Mechanical Works
Underwater repair and construction of concrete works, sluice gates and valves on dams and water works as well as harbour work which involves the building and maintenance of quay walls and caissons. If you have such skills as underwater cutting, welding and rigging they will be very helpful to you.

* Pipelines
The laying, maintenance and repair of oil, gas, water and effluent pipes.

* Sea-bed Surveys
Surveying and investigating the sea bed and reporting on sand profiles and reefs above and below sea level.

* Oil rigs
Maintenance and repair of oil rigs, platforms and sub-sea structures. This usually involves the use of NDT (non-destructive testing) methods, using sophisticated ultrasonic and electronic instruments. These areas of work also involve the use of underwater photography and closed-circuit television.

Most of the work would be done underwater in all kinds of conditions and it is sometimes dangerous. The visibility is often nil and water temperatures extremely low. Employers attempt to make operations as safe as possible but it would be up to you not to take unnecessary chances and endanger your own life.
