Cost and Management Accountant

The Cost & Management Accountant is a central figure in helping firms to improve productivity and efficiency. The Cost & Management Accountant provides information on product costs, product profitability, a division's profitability, budgets and variants from these budgets, on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. He will also produce reports to highlight under-utilization of a plant, low productivity, the cost of holding excessive materials, stocks and the effect of adding new products or dropping existing products from the range.
Much of the work involves producing information for management planning. The Cost & Management Accountant will provide figures and financial advice on such things as new processes, expansion of the plant, new products and the acquisition of new machinery and equipment.

To be successful in this career, one must have a natural aptitude for and interest in figures and bookkeeping. In order to adapt to change in marketing and production conditions, the Cost Accountant must be able to take the initiative and work quickly and efficiently; wasted time can cost the undertaking money. The ability to get on and work well with people is also important.

Commercial Accountants or other worthwhile positions in business administration such as Financial Manager, Director, General Manager, Administrative Manager and Company Secretary are held by CIS graduates or holders of other Accountancy National Diplomas.
