City Planner

A city planner is identical to a town planner but on a much larger scale. City planners need to have the ability to consider the economic, sociological, geological, architectural, industrial and geographical facets required for the efficient functioning of a city or a town that is likely to turn into a city. In order to do this, you would need an interest in these subjects, be highly intelligent and creative, dedicated and objective as well as having a deep desire to improve the living conditions of the people who will eventually live in the city. Some short-sighted city planners in the past made mistakes that can never be corrected without totally demolishing the city and starting from scratch. Even small cities grow and they need space in which to grow. Some small coastal towns offer some of the best examples of bad planning.
In the old days, few people imagined that thousands of motor cars, busses, trains, lorries and enormous vehicles would one day ply back and forth on their way to who knows where, so they built narrow carriage ways, small side walks and erected large industrial buildings or shops on sites which had the best views of the sea or the mountains. As more people flocked to the area and built their homes on available sites, they discovered that there was no space to park their cars in the town. Often, there was also no inexpensive way of widening the roads to accommodate the heavy traffic and no way around the town for a highway.

The modern city planner has to be able to visualise all possible future problems and plan accordingly. His imagination has to stretch almost into the far distant future where vehicles might only travel underground, on raised roads or in the air! You would have to be interested in such subjects as Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography, Biology and Physiology and be able to lead people and inspire architects, engineers, economists and sociologists to make brilliant suggestions that will improve the living conditions of the inhabitants.
