Branch Manager
Successful branch managers
are very self-disciplined, intelligent, responsible and presentable
people. You would need to be positive, enthusiastic, have good leadership
skills, get on well with people, be firm but just and have the ability and
perseverance to try and help the company achieve their goals. If you are
able to motivate people and make them feel that they are an important cog
in the business wheel, you will be a good example to them. Too many people
in top positions do not trouble to become acquainted with their staff or
understand their problems. No-one would expect you to solve all the
problems but if employees know that management is trying their best to
make life for everyone in the company as profitable, productive and
enjoyable as possible, they are much more likely to concentrate on doing
their best.
Every worker in a business is given a specific task or tasks to do by the
manager who does the planning co-ordinating and organising of activities
to reach the required goals and you would be the one to give orders and
exercise control over the entire process.
Good communication skills are vital as customers are the main source of
income and have to be treated with respect and tact. "Shrinkage" is a
polite word meaning "shop lifting" and `white-collar crimes' indicate
fraud and an astute manager employs people who are expert in detecting
people with these nasty traits.
A branch manager is responsible for the management of a bank branch, a
speciality or department store and your responsibilities would include the
profits of the branch or store, the costs, stocks, security,
administration, the selection, interviewing and training of staff members
and staff development. The planning, organising, co-ordinating and control
of the branch would be entirely in your hands. Your working hours would be
spent in your own office while you plan the activities of the branch but
there will be times when you would have to inspect the actual store and
see what is going on, what is wrong and what faults need to be corrected.
Also in your control would be the receiving, administrating, price-fixing,
ordering, rotation of stock and the profit margin. The store's budget is
usually congruent with the budget set up by the head office and theft and
burglaries would also be your responsibility. Matters such as productivity
and personnel performance, motivation of staff, staff registers, medical
and pension benefits and the payments of wages would also be your
responsibility as well as the selection, appointment and training of staff
members.
Many branch managers have to accept that they might be transferred from
town to town in the quest for promotion.
Every large organisation that has branches needs managers. There are no
limits to the employment possibilities but usually, you would be employed
in a lesser position and advance to a higher post later - after gaining
experience.
