Keep
job application cover letter short
When it comes to cover letters, shorter
is better. Their sole purpose is to get the reader to turn the page to
your resume. The longer your letter, the harder it is to read. When an
HR staffer is poring over a mountain of resumes for every open position,
which cover letters do you think will be read thoroughly?
Rule of thumb: If it takes longer than a minute to read, your cover
letter is too long.
So, how do you keep it simple and still make your point? Easy. Start by
inserting "Subject: (ad title)" after the greeting, instead of using the
standard, trite "I am responding to..." opening sentence. Both say the
same thing, but one uses fewer words to make the point.
The first sentence of your response should focus on the skills and
background you'll bring to the job. Follow this with a short (3-5),
bullet-point list of your accomplishments. Bullet points aren't
paragraphs. They shouldn't take more than two lines each.
