Make sure your resume works online

With more and more employers allowing -- even requesting -- online resume submission, it's important to make your resume Internet-worthy. It's a different process than designing a resume to be printed out and mailed, or brought with you to job fairs and interviews. Each kind of computer operating system, such as Windows or Mac OS, translates data differently. So unless you're careful, the employer may not be able to open your e-mailed resume or the file may look distorted. To ensure that employers get the resume that you want to present:

* Avoid fancy fonts. Stick with some basic fonts that most computers have, such as Times New Roman, Arial and Courier New. They are simple and professional and will look the same no matter what kind of software the employer uses to view your resume.

* Save your document in a text format. While a program like Microsoft Publisher enables you to easily add graphics and create an eye-popping resume, it saves files in a PDF format. The easiest type of file for employers to open would be a TXT file, which is how most word-processing programs save documents.

* Keep it simple. Stay away from bulleted lists, lots of indentations and centered alignments. Again, you want your resume to look the same no matter what program the employer is using.

* Check how the employer would like to receive your resume. Some may want you to send it in the body of the e-mail while others prefer to have it as an attached file.

* Make sure to save the "online version" of your resume as a separate file from your normal resume.
