Should You Mention Hobbies in Your Resume?
There is no debating the fact that a well written and correctly
drafted resume is your best bet for getting called for that crucial
interview. Whether you finally get the job or not, then depends on how
you fare in your job interview.
A lot has been said about what an ideal resume should contain.
However, have you given thought to that last section on your resume
that mostly reads – Hobbies / Interests? Most of us consider this to
be an open ended section and use it to mention just about anything.
However, what you must remember here is that like everything else in
life, this section on your resume too, needs to be balanced.
If you think you have some extra space to spare, there is no harm in
narrowing down and then mentioning a few non-controversial interests
and hobbies, provided you keep the following tips in mind –
1. Be Picky & Choose well – You may have numerous interests and
hobbies that you like to indulge in besides work. However, that
doesn’t mean that you should mention each and every one of them in
your resume. The trick is to make a list and then choose from among
the list to mention those points that differentiate you from others.
2. Don’t get swept off your feet – You may have been a part of
many extra curricular activities during your school and college years
but please do not list down every minute detail as no one has the time
or interest in all that. Don’t spill out your life history. Rather
maintain a balance.
3. Try to highlight the different shades of your personality –
You can highlight your achievements outside the work place as these
help in bringing out your personality.
You must refrain from mentioning anything that may be taken the wrong
way.
