Planning to Email Your Resume & Cover Letter?

A lot of Companies are using the online medium to streamline their recruiting process. This is the reason why, most job advertisements mention an email id to which job seekers can forward their resumes and cover letters. Even those recruitment ads that announce a walk-in interview provide an alternative to those who can’t make it for the interview to email their updated resume for their perusal.

With the internet becoming a big part of every day life, almost every individual has an email address and access to the internet to email necessary documents to the prospective employer. Let’s face it, the internet has simplified and streamlined the whole process marvelously.

Though shooting an email to a prospective employer is easy, it is not always done properly and this is where candidates tend to lose out on a perfectly good opportunity.

Here are a few important points that must be kept it mind when emailing your resume to prospective employers –

• Use a relevant Subject Line – When emailing your resume, use an apt Subject line for your email, preferably the job title for which you are applying and the job code, if any.
• Refrain from using your present work email to apply for another job – it just doesn’t look professional and besides, it can adversely effect your present employment if found out.
• Attach your Cover Letter only if you have been asked to - No one has the time to read lengthy documents so it is better to use your email to present a few lines that show your intent.
• You don’t have to follow up with a hard copy of your Resume – What you can do is to follow up with a call to check if your mail with the attachments has been received.
