In the world everything, substance, man and other animals are made from
the panchmanabhoot’s, that is the five basic elements viz the earth, the
water, the fire, the wind and the sky. These elements have close
relationship with man and his environment. Nature has given them their
proper place according to merit. If we give proper place to these elements
in our building we become one with nature. Actually nature is the God. One
can experience the eternal truth of nature on every step. The whole nature
is overpowered with magnetic environment.
The modern man has waged a war with nature in many fields. We can see nature with our own eyes and we can experience the Panchmahabhoota’s. Going against them would lead us to sure destruction. Taking the surrounding and the proper places for these elements into consideration, the sages and seers introduced Vastushastra.
Vastushastra :
The term Vastu shastra is derived from Sanskrit words ‘vastu’ and ‘Shastra’.
Vastu means nature, surrounding or environment and Shastra means systems.
This ancient mystic science and art of designing and construction building
finds its origin in Stapatya veda which is a part of Atharvana veda. It
was modified as a system in 6th century AD and has been followed since in
the construction of temples, particularly in the south.
Vastu Shastra is an ancient art and science containing principles and practices of constructing building which ensure a harmonious balance between the man and nature and there by bring all round happiness, health, wealth and prosperity. It gives instructions on the right kind of plot, the directions the buildings should face, its proportions, its relation to the surrounding landscape and guidance on light and air and layout of the rooms, bearing in mind, the earth magnetic field and India's climate and aiming to ensure that the buildings is auspicious for its occupants. Vastu revolves around few basic concepts as the base of Vastu study.

The basic five elements i.e. nature, which consists of five elements sky, air, fire, earth and water. Vastu is affected with positive power of three elements: the earth, the water and the fire (the sun). There is a constant interaction between these elements. Man has to understand their effectiveness and design his buildings accordingly to take full advantage of these natural forces such as in hot climate zones homes with thick wall (earth) and slit windows (this will keep the house cool and ensure ventilation), Fountains (water) enhances the coolness and ensure ventilation. The circulations of the elements i.e. the air, the water, the sun and the earth are interconnected they depend on each other and they affect the indoor climate. The house walls are breathing skin and exchange of energies takes place and elements are transformed in building space.
The Sun and its effect of living beings: Sun is the positive source of energy on the earth. Due to the far distance from sun to earth, the earth receives only a fraction of the heat generated by sun and same is sufficient for existence of living organism on earth. Scientists of astro-physics discovered that the solar light is being transmitted to catch constantly and continuously under three segments namely, the visible middle spectrum, the invisible spectrum on north side and invisible spectrum on the south side. The visible spectrum in the middle contains seven colours; violet, indigo, blue, green yellow, orange, and red (VIBGV1OR). As the sun advances from sunrise to midday gradually increasing temperature and decreasing atmospheric humidity mark his course in the first quadrant. Reverse happens in the second quadrant of the day. Ultraviolet rays are more beneficial biologically them infrared rays. So the direction North, North-east and South east directions are more important in designing house as compared to South, south west and west direction.
The magnetic field of Earth: The earth was formed about 460 million years ago and it was a fiery ball. In due course of time, the rocks melted and the surface has formed and acquired magnetism due to the magnetic particles embedded within. It has two poles north pole and South Pole. Northern magnetic energy stimulates us mentally, keeps us cool. South magnetic energy keeps us to inspire our physical fitness. North is negative magnetic field and south is positive field. Human body itself acts as a powerful magnet, with the head as the North pole. The magnetic field create with the existence of opposites (+) and (-), electron (+) and protons (-). So when we sleep with head in southern side, the north pole of the body i.e. head attract South Pole of earth thus blood circulate freely hence sound sleep occur and vice versa. The magnetic meridian should pass through the centers of the plot while planning the structure, care should be taken that is parallel to wall compound. The passing of the magnetic axis through the middle of plot is good.
The eight cardinal directions: The science of Vastu Shastra identifies eight directions, each of which has a particular significance.

These Gods governs the directions and control the various areas as given above. The God controlling the area in the house is worshipped and offers made to please him, requesting for his blessing and peaceful happy life.
The Vastu Purush Mandala : The story of Matsya Puran tells us about the birth of VastuPurush. He is a cosmic man created by Devs to help them to over come the Asura, following the victory, become unmanageable. The Devas strew him down on the earth. He landed on his stomach. His body put into a grid provides a blue print of buildings. 81 deities are holding the body of Vastu Purush. The head is captured by Ishwar so pooja ghar should be there is NE corner. It should be observed that toilet should never be placed on the head. The navel is captured by Bhrama so any beam across this area will create tension and worries to those living/sitting below it. So as different God occupied difference positions. Vastu Shastra gives the directive principles regarding construction of building so as not to displease the Vastu Purush. (Fig. A).

The algebraic sum total of these five forces decides the vastu place.
Scientifically, vastu principles are based on magnetic forces, gravitational forces, solar system, wind directions and cardinal direction, the average conditions of weather and the combinations of climatic elements.
In addition to above, temperature, humidity, radiation, barometric pressure, rainfall, have a great influence on the physical environment, which governs the law of Vastu.
