How is the Pen Mightier than the Sword in India

Two words begin with the same letters P -  PEN and PEACE. One immediately perceives tranquil calmness - almost like a lull before a storm! What a sword might not say words can much more. On the other hand sword is symbolic with violence and extreme emotions or brute strength. India is an ancient civilization. Its contribution in enriching the world through acquired Knowledge down the ages is well known. Historically speaking, the conquerors who came to rule India themselves assimilated within the Indian way of life. In this era of intolerance religious or otherwise, India is a shining example of how it weathers every onslaught from negative forces within and outside the country.

How can one justify that indeed the PEN is mightier than the sword in India. For starters we can begin with our freedom struggle which was bogged down by the people who wielded the sword. The idea to achieve freedom through an armed conflict never saw light of day. Instead it was our age-old belief in ahimsa and awakening of National pride which helped us free India from the clutches of colonialism. Peaceful protest marches, fiery editorials inspired the youth in launching the Quit India movement. It is undeniably true that that very movement caused the setting of the sun for the British Empire.

Presently we have seen swords clash literally right through the 80’s in Punjab, now in Jammu and Kashmir and so many other places in India. But as an Indian I am so proud to say that those who pick up the sword come to realize the virtue to hold the Pen which means PEACE. They can be won over and they gradually assimilate in the national mainstream which is their birthright. It’s the power of the media which brings faster solutions to delicate problems.

The social fight, the needs of the poor have been highlighted and met. The great cyclone scourge in Orissa a couple of years back had an outpouring of global sympathy and nations across the world stepped in sending emergency supplies. As did they do it in the massive earthquake that hit Gujarat. The world community helped as a whole in rebuilding a vibrant Gujarat. Although not much was done when Gujarat was burning.

The Indian Tiger is sleeping when it awakens it will rule the world. The global IT industry is Knowledge based. The world has begun to sit up and notice the vast pool of talent available here. To begin with it was the cheap labor which attracted investors. Now the Indians are giving a stiff competition. We are now talking of a Silicon Valley in India. The biggest pool of skilled personnel is in India . The BPO industry is up up and away.

Well what’s there to say now through time we have gained through Knowledge and have shared our knowledge, tolerance , wisdom and years enriched through our thousands of years of culturally rich society with world. We find the reflection of Mahatma Gandhi’s satyagraha movement in Martin Luther King Jr. In the not so recent past we have Nelson Mandela so inspired by Gandhi.

If you ask me is the Pen Mightier than the sword in India? Yes it is. There are many critics to this view but in the end Peace not violence, amity not enmity is the path to choose. Sure it’s a lengthy arduous path full of pitfalls but it brings Peace Progress and Tranquility to disillusioned polity.
