Oye - this is Dilli
The city of the Mughals - stroll
down to Chandni Chowk, sit in the spray of the fountains, eat chaat
and parathas and humungous jalebis...
The Dilli that was.
They changed the name to National Capital Region - NCR. So what do you
do now?
Drive down to Saket to chill out, grab a bite at Dilli Haat, party in
Noida, and drive back to your home and bedroom in Gurgaon after
picking up flowers in Def Col! Ancient Dilli of the seven cities has
made way for Modern Delhi of the 10 cities, where there is a different
venue for every menu. Delhi Times takes you around the whirl in 10
ways.
Apartment City
Mayur Vihar / Patparganj in the trans-Yamuna area has over 10000
apartments. "Proximity to ITO, Noida and Sarai Kale Khan adds to the
real estate value," points out property agent Akhil Khanna. With
competitive prices — ranging from Rs 12 lakh for LIG flats to Rs 26
lakh for HIG flats — it's boom time here. "Mayur Vihar could well
become the apartment capital of Asia.
Youth City:
ooh, it's Delhi University North campus - where all the cool dudes and
hot chics hang out, where MNCs compete with the
ilkshake/momo/bhelpuri/lemonade/chhole-bhature walla , where campus
life is at its fundoo (K-Nags, it's called) best. Where classes hqave
only a 66% attendance, but the cafes have 100%.
Fun City
Saket - home to the original PVR - proving the old adage that
lightning does not strike twice (Mr. Bijli take note). Shopping
options and cinemas draw the upwardly mobile and swish set here. And
after the sun sets, the pubs/bars in the area come alive with people
and music. If pubbing's on your mind, the Saket complex is the place
to be. If sitting on a sofa shaped like a woman's lips isn't dorky
enough, there's something called Liquid Panti. Hey, you don't really
need tickets for the next movie show, do you?
Sex City
It's Palika Bazaar for CDs, but CP itself has become seedy. As the
light fades, the sex life cruises —pimps do the rounds, as do
undercover cops. But wait, there's plenty of action for the shopping
voyeur too. With all the major brands available here, this one's a
favourite hangout —not least because you can window-shop with ice
cream!
Party City
Noida - Spunky lifestyle stores, designer outlets, groovy pubs and
eateries, multiplexes... it's party time, folks! It's a trendy,
vibrant location. For those working in Delhi's corporates and call
centres, the pub, mall, multiplex culture is a whiff of fresh air.
Waiting to exhale?
Posh City
Home to the glitterati - flyovers, upmarket entertainment
centres/malls, markets, green cover, the swish set as neighbours...
GK, primarily populated by P3Ps and the nouveau riche, has everything
going for it. So much so, property rates here touch Rs 80,000/square
yard. "The posh label is reflected by the lifestyle of people here,"
says Warrick, a boutique owner in GK II. As Posh would say, that's the
Spice!
Food City
Tibetan to Goan, Bengali to Kashmiri, not to mention Punjabi...
cuisine is a multi-cultural word here. Indian cuisine, in all its
forms, finds outlets at moderate rates. Thats Dilli Haat. What adds to
the eating-out experience is the crafts bazaar. The cement tables and
benches notwithstanding, there's a Delhicious menu.
Flower City
This is probably where florists first took root. Def Col is always in
full bloom. As wedding planner Amrish Pershad says: "The flower mark
et here is famous because of its central location to embassies and the
exotic varieties available." So there's everything from Oriental
lilies to carnations and anthoriums. Phool marks, what say?
Marriage City
And you thought marriages were made in heaven! Well, for the Delhiite,
the first preference is Chattarpur Farms. Right from the shaadi of the
guy next door to high-profile weddings like that of Ritu Beri-Bobby
Chadha, Chattarpur is the place to tie the knot.
Bedroom City
Space is why corporates have taken up offices here. And space is why
corporate execs prefer staying here. Gurgaon. Problem is, the jams on
the highway insure that commuting takes up a helluva lot of time...
There are days when people reach home after 10, which only leaves time
for dinner and sleep." Sweet dreams!
