How to Beat the Heat This Summer?

Summer time in New Delhi can be truly oppressive and can turn into quite an ordeal especially if you need to stay outdoors for long hours. In the months of May & June, Delhi turns into a pre heated oven - hot enough to bake and even burn the skin!

Here are a few simple tips that can help you to beat the heat this summer -

1) Before stepping out of the house, make sure to apply a good coat of sun screen lotion on your face, neck, hands and other exposed parts of the body. Doping so will protect your skin from getting burnt. If you have sensitive skin that tans easily, it is imperative that you protect your skin. As much as possible, wear clothes that cover your arms and protect your skin from harmful rays of the sun.

2) Drink lots of water and other liquids - more and more of it. During summers, the body looses a lot of water in the form of sweat and it is important to increase the intake of fluids to avoid dehydration. Cool juices, shakes and the good old nibu paani (lemonade) are great heat relievers. As much as possible, carry your share of water with you when you step out of the house.

Avoid food that is fried and oily. Instead, relish cool water based fruits, light food items that are good for the stomach.

3) Dress Right! - If you do not have the right clothes for this season, go shop for some. Put away all your synthetic and nylon clothing that stick to your body and make matters worse. Instead, wear more of loose fitting cotton and khadi clothing that lets your body breathe and allows perspiration to evaporate.

Fashion Trends this summer - What to wear and what not to wear!

Cool colors are in! Shades of blue, orange, gold, red and whites. If you prefer pastel colors, there are plenty of choices too! Lemon, olives, cheery yellows etc. Avoid dark colors like black and go in for light, bright colors.

Women can be seen in a lot of long flowing, A line, knee length skirts in flowery prints and cool colors. Men also prefer wearing light, pastel colors this summer.

4) Carry an umbrella and use a good pair of sunglasses / shades when out of your home. If you wear lenses, protecting your eyes from heat and dust becomes extra important.

5) Keep your mind Cool ! - Probably the most important thing that you can do this summer is to keep a cool head at all times. During summers in Delhi, mercury is not the only thing rising. Tempers are shooting up as well and this is leads to multiple problems like road rage etc. The best thing that you can do for yourself and others is to relax, have cool juices and beat the heat!

The heat is on and it is up to you to best equip yourself to deal with it.
