Leadership: The Single Most Important
Skill That Persuades Head-hunters and Employers That They Have Found
The Perfect Candidate
Today's employers, recruiters and headhunters know that successful
candidates must above all be effective leaders. Leadership is
not simply a skill; it is a talent and one
that is inherent to a person's character. While the fundamentals of
good leadership can be learned, the most effective leaders possess an
innate ability to direct others.
Leadership is about influencing others to get things done willingly
and at a standard that is superior to their norm.
Leadership is a complex skill and requires effective social
interaction if one is to achieve their goals and win the commitment of
others to these goals. An effective leader will enhance group cohesion
and positively change organizational culture. And don't dismiss the
concept of leadership simply because you are not a CEO or Company
President. Leadership is a quality that is required in every employee
in every job available in today's world. How we conduct
ourselves as individuals sets us apart from others. Colleagues at
every level respect an employee with an innate sense of leadership and
respond positively to that person, very often modeling their own
behavior similarly.
Having the ability to mold a group of people into a cohesive team that
delivers a competitive advantage to the business sets one apart from
the crowd. Having the ability
to make people work collaboratively while motivating them to excel as
a group, producing results that far outweigh an individual's success
is even more extraordinary.
It is the role of the leader to create self-motivated and engaged team
members who buy into the organizations goals. A leader must be
able to deliver constructive change that
meets the organizations long term needs.
Leaders must be open to new ideas and concepts and adopt a position of
continuous learning if they are to be consistently successful.
Effective leadership is based upon an individuals personal values,
their ability to deal with conflict and their ability to direct and
energize their workforce to achieve even greater goals than they
initially thought possible.
Leaders who have the ability to bind their employees loyally to them
are a rare breed. Inspiring loyalty in others is about much more than
ability; it is about personality and humanity. While organizations
grow more and more results based, nevertheless, those leaders that
care deeply for their employees generate the most effective results.
Making a connection with colleagues, peers and employees is critical
if one is to see visible results. Organizational capabilities and
leadership competencies go hand in hand
with coaching, mentoring and employee empowerment.
Superior communication and interpersonal skills are key to achieving
these results. Active listening is a skill that cannot be undervalued.
Leaders that communicate effectively will foster a spirit of
self-leadership and pride within the team. Leadership is not about the
leader, it is about the success of his or her followers and their
ability to contribute to an organizations overall success.
Candidates that have the ability to articulate their expertise as a
leader stand a far greater chance of success. Hiring managers place
this skill at the top of their priority list when shopping for new
candidates.
