Job Fairs in India

Job fairs are becoming a common phenomenon in India. Their effectiveness, though, remains debatable. Being at a nascent stage, we need to wait and watch to see how it develops a relevance to our unique jobmarket conditions.

Most commonly held ones are focused on entry level and junior positions in the call centre industry, but a few speciality one like in the IT or construction industry have also happened. Organisers of Jobfairs maintain that the commercials of organizing a
jobfair is sound considering the volume of participants involved. And it is the best way to collect an excellent mailing list of candidates, which can be put to good use. Timesjobs.com, we are old, maintains list of participants to add on to registrations on their job site.

At this stage, how best can you make best use of a job fair?

Jobfairs offer a good opportunity to interact with employers, who size up candidates quickly, based on appearances and first impressions. Job fairs have a set of rules and protocols all their own. If you understand how to effectively work within the system, you can easily double or triple your productivity and effectiveness. Usually jobseekers are browsing to see what is available. You must remember, though, that what seems to be a quick meet with an employer serves as a real interview. You are being evaluated Also.

Following are some of the items you will need to bring with you to the job fair:

Resumes - Yes, you are required to bring one. And it better be an outstanding one because at the end of the day it is often difficult for recruiters to sort out the bad from the good. Bring at least two copies of your resume for each employer you plan to speak with. If you have multiple job objectives, bring multiple resumes. (And remember not to get them mixed up)

Letters of Recommendation - Make copies of your top three letters of recommendation multiplied by the number of employers you plan to meet with. Make sure all of the employers you are interested in get copies of your letters of recommendation. It will force them to file you differently from the rest of their stack of resumes.

File Case – Carry a smart file case to store all the copies of your resumes and letters of recommendation, as well as a pad for taking notes after talking with each employer.

Briefcase - The amount of information you pick up at a job fair can sometimes be rather daunting. Avoid plastic bags (or paper ones if you are environment friendly) to carry all the material you pick up – use a smart briefcase. A brief case gives you a mini-office from which to operate. It also provides a much more professional look than the plastic bag most job fair attendees walk around with.

Dress - Image is crucial at a job fair--even more important than at a normal interview since decisions are made much more quickly. This is not the time to model the latest in campus fashions. Make sure you wear conservative business or work clothes – no hipsters, no T-shirts with flashy slogans. Keep it so their focus is on a positive you, rather than negatively on your clothes.
