Scouting is an approved form of character
training and a preparation for good citizenship designed for the benefit
of young men and boys. It implies an attractive type of outdoor life
coupled with activities which promote development of character, encourage
formation of health habits, impart skills useful in everyday life and
prepare the individual for service to society and fellowmen. It is a kind
of training which instills a sense of responsibility and trustworthiness,
provides the individual opportunities for developing initiative and
leadership and promotes self control, self reliance and self-direction.
Dean James E. Russell of the teachers college, Columbia University, New
York, has great praise and admiration for scouting. He describes the
programme of the Boy Scout as a “man’s job cut down to the size of the
boy”.
“It appeals to the size of the boy," he says, "not merely because he is a
man in the making”. He points out what is quite true, namely that the
programme of scout does not ask of the boy anything that the man does not
do. "Step by step does scouting take him," he says, "from the place where
he now is until he reaches the place where he would be".
Dean Russell points out further that it is not the curriculum of scouting
that is its most striking feature, but it is the method.
This article is solely written by me to understand the importance of this
sort of training and the benefits achieved by each individual and how much
it is essential to bring out an effective manager. Since scouting is a
voluntary organization, it can be made an extra curricular activity for
every individual in a B-school to impart the desired characteristics of an
efficient and an effective manager. I had tried my level best to bring out
a comparative study of how best a scout can turn out to be an effective
manager.
The primary motto of a scout is to “ BE PREPARED”
for any happenings and to render a helping hand. This should
also be the motto of the modern managers as the future is unpredictable
and each manager should “ BE PREPARED” for any situation.
The administrative framework of scouts is to work in a group with a group
leader to maintain the work. This is similar to an organizational setup
where in a leader will govern the project. This helps in adaptability of
an individual in an organization.
Scouting is outing. The games which are played in camps and hikes are much
more similar to the management games that have been developed for the
betterment of the managers.
The scout laws, which are enthused at the beginning stage itself, stress
mainly on trustworthiness, being friendly to all, loyalty and being
friendly to society. This is much more similar to what we speak about
corporate governance, business ethics, being friendly to the co-workers.
By being a good patrol leader one develops one's HR skills, which is very
essential in every stage of organizational behavior.
In scouting each and every person is asked to perform the role of an
ambassador for each patrol he is representing, which is very much similar
to the task of marketing professionals in an organization. Each person
acts, as an ambassador for his or her organization.
Thus I could bring out the effectiveness in having a voluntary association
in a B-school, for the betterment of the student community.
