VW to set up manufacturing plant in south India
Expatica - Netherlands
NEW DELHI - German automobile major Volkswagen will be setting
up a manufacturing plant in the southern Indian state of
Andhra Pradesh, it was reported on Sunday.
The USD 900 million (EUR 702 million) facility will be set up
at the port town of Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh's minister
for industries Botsa Satyanarayana said, according to news
agency PTI.
The minister said a team of Volkswagen officials would visit
Andhra Pradesh later this month to discuss matters relating to
the location of the plant and its ancillary units.
"Initially, Visakhapatnam was to be an assembling unit with
parts coming from their manufacturing facilities around the
world. Now it has been
decided that it is going to be a full- fledged manufacturing
unit and ancillary units", Satyanarayana said on his return
from Germany where he visited Volkswagen's headquarters.
The plant would be spread over 141 hectares and generate up to
10,000 jobs.
"We expect everything to be crystallised in 30 to 40 days,"
Satyanarayana said.
