Amec sends engineers to China and India
Telegraph.co.uk - UK
Amec, Britain's largest support services and construction
company, is switching substantial amounts of engineering
jobs to countries in Asia.
The engineering giant's oil and gas business has already
hired up to 600 engineers across the subcontinent to cut
costs and cope with the growing shortage of high-quality
engineers in Britain.
The new jobs are primarily posts for design engineers. Amec
has hired 300 engineers in New Delhi, 100 in China and
another 100 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
Neil Bruce, the managing director of Amec's oil and gas
business, said: "India in particular has a large pool of
high-quality graduates and experienced engineers. A lot of
these people are just not available in the UK. Our primary
aim is ensuring the work can be done efficiently, but of
course this [offshoring] is much more cost-efficient."
So far banks, insurers and IT firms have outsourced
thousands of call centre and back office jobs to India,
where they can employ staff for a third of the cost in
Britain. According to the Communications Workers Union, 33
of Britain's largest businesses have collectively outsourced
52,000 jobs to India over the past four years.
Amicus, the engineering trade union, criticised Amec's
decision. |
