Ignou campus opens up for talent hunt
Times of India - India
NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University has taken
up schemes for campus recruitments for its pass-outs. Even
ordinary graduates are likely to get exposures to walk along
the professional courses pass-out talents to try luck in the
tough job markets.
According to Ignou's joint registrar for Students
Registration and Evaluation Division Col SN Katiyar, about
2,400 pass-outs were intimated about the campus interview in
last month and 1,200 of them had turned up. "Though the
final results are yet to come up, we understand the results
of a few of them have been finalised. But nothing has been
given to us as yet finally. We are putting in a little
effort to shape out something for the students. It is hoped
the firms will call us up again and some pass-outs will
finally be given jobs."
The pass-outs got an opportunity to appear before a select
Ignou panel of academics and the Gecis, a globally reputed
business process service providers and an affiliate of the
multi-national GE Capital. Initially the Gecis was
recruiting for its call-centres. Insiders in the team are
all gaga about the acceptability trend. They strongly feel
the trend will gather momentum.
The Ignou has formed a Placement Cell at its headquarters
here for the purpose. At present general graduates from
arts, commerce, computers and information technology
faculties are being helped for the interviews.
Pro vice chancellor SC Garg, who reportedly was behind the
new move, feels the augury is good. "Though we are yet to be
told about the fate of the interviews in clearer terms, the
move has generated enthusiasm among students. The Placement
Cell has commenced operations this February."
Grecis, which is present in Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata and
Bangalore, is all set to start its operation in the NCR too.
Globally across, the company has 17,000 employees. The areas
of operation it's offering are contact centres, finance and
accounting, insurance services and IT services including
Software and Content Solutions, said Ignou.
Ignou move is novel in many ways. For the first time a
distant learning education provider in the country has
started offering job prospects to its Open and Distant
Learners (ODLs), which sincelong was the prerogative of
traditional Brahmins among Indian universities.
Besides, the Ignou move is likely to create a competitive
environment among ODL centres in the country and abroad.
Already the numero uno among the world ODL centres, closely
followed by China's, Ignou has surpassed many traditional
methods run by the British open university, the oldest
concept in distant education.
