Mukesh's ambitious telecom project has seen to it that Reliance is now
being seen by the world as much more than a petrochemicals company
Two's Company
FOR STARTERS, this poll was conducted before the perceived discord between
the two brothers became the talking point across India Inc. Some of you may
be wondering whether we polled the brothers separately. The answer to that
is yes. Like we did last year, the two brothers were polled separately. The
Ambanis being right up there on any power list is hardly surprising. For if
the Nehru-Gandhis are the first family of India then it can be argued that
the Ambanis aren't too far behind. The happenings of the recent weeks show
the power that the Ambanis wield not just in the corporate world but over
the entire nation. . Today a nation waits with bated breath to see what
direction the perceived discord between the two brothers will take.
Pan of the reason is the fact that for a long time the two brothers were
seen as providing the ideal foil to each other. That's understandable, given
their complementary qualities.
Mukesh Ambani is seen as providing the analytical, meticulous and
eye-for-detail skills that every diversified conglomerate needs, to be
successful, whereas Anil Ambani is seen as bringing to the table the
aggression, financial acumen and networking skills that are equally crucial.
They were quick to try and raise the issue on the passing away of Reliance
patriarch Dhirubhai Ambani in July 2002. 'Will they or won't they remain
together?' they speculated, and soon rumours abounded about separate empires
for Mukesh and Anil Ambani, carved out of India's largest conglomerate in
India with revenues of $16.8 billion
— that's 3.5% of India's GDP
— and an estimated combined net worth of $6 billion, according to the Forbes
annual list of billionaires for 2004. However, nothing happened and it was
business as usual for the Ambani brothers.
Anil Ambani
Vice-chairman, RIL
Anil's power flows from his steely determination to ensure that Reliance
lights
up every Indian household
To their credit, till now, the two brothers remained above all controversy
and concentrated on adding to the vast empire left by their father. From an
old generation textile and petrochemical firm, Reliance blossomed into a
21st century player with interests in power generation, oil exploration,
finance and biotech, and became a leading player in the fast-growing telecom
sector. Such has been the confidence of the Indian investors in the future
of the company that nearly one out of every four investors supposedly
possesses
shares in a Reliance company. It should also be remembered that despite
these rumours of discord having been in the air for quite a while, the
public at large continues to see the two brothers as joint bearers of the
Ambani standard.
Discord within one of the most powerful corporate families in corporate
India is naturally quite remarkable. But the fact of the matter is that so
far, there has been more smoke than any real fire. Other than a few e-mails
and official letters of correspondence neither brother has chosen to speak
at length on the issue. By the time this comes out in print it could well be
that the perceived discord is history and the two brothers are once again
working shoulder to shoulder to take Reliance to greater heights.
