Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw CMD, Biocon
made a big bang entry this year coming in straight at No 13. Ironic then that Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw became an entrepreneur by accident. When she failed to break into India's brewing industry, inspite of a requisite degree, a peeved Shaw started Biocon in 1978 in a garage, laying the foundation for India's biotech industry.
Post a dream IPO, Shaw has become the poster girl for Indian women
entrepreneurs, and a source of inspiration to many others. The future
could well see her becoming the first woman to crack the top 10 of our
list.
