LAST year, we said that he was the man most likely to break into the top 10 and well he's done it.
If there's one thing Sunil Mittal has in plenty, it's guts. It takes a lot of nerve to do what no other telecom company had ever done before — outsource networks and IT infrastructure, the two core functions of Bharti Tele-Ventures, to vendors like IBM. If he succeeds, Mittal will change the face of telecom.
But then, Mittal's never showed a lack of nerves, not once in the time it
has taken him to cover the distance from the crowded trader bastion of
Chandni Chowk to Amrita Shergill Marg in Lutyen's Delhi. "From making
bicycle parts in Ludhiana... Mittal is now India's leading telecom pioneer
and" said Forbes very aptly, when he made his debut on the Forbes annual
list of the world's billionaires with a net worth of $2.7 billion, in early
2004.
India's most ambitious telecom entrepreneur today, this graduate from Punjab
University has managed to prove his skeptics wrong. There were many who had
scoffed when Bharti ente-prises had first bid for cellular phone services in
New Delhi in 1992.
Not
only was Airtel, Mittal's cellphone service for Delhi, the first private
Indian telecom player to turn a profit, thanks to aggressive marketing,
Bharti also became the first local firm to run telecom services abroad when
it won a license to operate in Seychelles. And since then, Mittal has proved
his mettle yet again, this time taking on the Ambanis, whose entry into the
market was supposed to have finished him off. "When a storm hits you, you
simply lie on the ground." With that simple logic, he successfully warded
off the Reliance threat.
