Vadodara, : In a move to provide employment to the hearing impaired, the
District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC) at SSG hospital intends
to interview 18,000 of them throughout the state and register their names
in the website, Jobsfordeaf.com.
Mumbai-based, AYJ National Institute of Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH) —
that train special educators — mooted an idea to float a web site which
will have a record of the number of unemployed handicapped job seekers and
also facilitate as an online reference for potential employers.
‘‘The DDRC centres will accept applications from job seekers in Vadodara,
Surat and Ahmedabad. We will screen them, measure their potential and post
details of selected candidates on the website,’’ said Manoj Kumar, a
Prosthetic and Orthotic engineer in DDRC.
The Nodal officer of AYJNIHH will conduct the interview. The programme
aims to select people useful for various IT jobs, jobs at warehouses,
packaging jobs and others.
‘‘Presently a lot of physically challenged people are employed in computer
centres and DTP units. Corporates steer clear from employing such people
fearing communication gap. These days the sign language is rendered
useless and if a person cannot read he can read lips and make out what is
being said. We conduct speech therapy training in this regard,’’ said Nita
Nair a special educator. ‘‘Equipments like hearing aid and others also
render useful,’’ she added.
After screening candidates, the DDRC would also impart substantial
training in special education and speech therapy to make them market
friendly. ‘‘The centre (DDRC) provides a number of services and we want to
take this up as an extension of our prevailing services. We already have
substantially trained educators in place who could impart the requisite
job trainings,’’ said Martin Mathew, DDRC nodal officer. Registrations are
open at all three DDRC centres in Gujarat between 10 am - 5 pm. on all
working days.
