For
GIS it is difficult to select one definitive definition. Definition of GIS
will depend on who is giving it, and their background and viewpoint. As a
general it can be described as a system, which includes: the computer
(hardware & operating system), the software, spatial data, data
management and analysis procedures, and the people to operate the GIS. It
is more comprehensive perspective that is adopted now a days. Now days this technology is being used by various organizations in various application areas. It helps the planners and policy makers to plan the task more efficiently and execute it cost effectively. The general application areas where GIS is being used are: 1. Socio-economic/government Health, Local government, Transportation planning, Service planning, urban management. 2. Defense agencies: Target site identification, Tactical support planning, Mobile command modelling, and Intelligence data integration. 3. Commerce & business: Market share analysis, Insurance, Fleet management, Direct marketing, Target marketing, Retail site location. 4. Utilities: Network management, Service provision, Telecommunications, Emergency repairs. 5. Environmental management: Landfill site selection and mineral mapping potential, Pollution monitoring, Natural hazard assessment, and Resource management, EIA. The immense power of this technology along with remote sensing (satellite and radar imaging), aerial photogrammetry and GPS are a great help for policy makers/decision takers. In all types of GIS applications, geodatabase (data along with its positional accuracy) is a big part. Preparation of Geodatabase, Application development/Modelling are the two parts, one has to concentrate for their careers. As major part of the world don’t have proper geodatabase and hence, here lies the market of GIS. |
