Diploma of
Computer Game Development (Animation)
Course Information
During the stage one of the Diploma of Computer Game Development animation
students are given a variety of assignments to complete each covering a
specific area of the course material as well as reinforcing what has
already been learned. They also spend time working on a concept reel for a
commercially realistic animation project for film, television or computer
games.
At the same time programming students are introduced to the operations and
practices of the industry and develop their working knowledge of the C/C++
programming languages. The remainder of the course develops the student's
hands-on experience by using team-based exercises resulting in the
development of a game using a commercial engine. Teamwork, design and
programming skills are honed through this exercise, preparing students for
future large scale projects. It also provides students with a finished
"game demo" for prospective employers.
Stage two of the course brings together students from the animation and
programming streams. Students work in a real-life game development team to
design and produce a computer game. The end product of the course is a
sizeable game that may be used to demonstrate student skills to
prospective employers or publishers.
Throughout the Diploma, guest lecturers from the industry are on hand to
provide students with information about specific industry topics. Industry
designers and AIE senior tutors drive the course development process.
From the initial pitching and design stages right through to the 24/7-
sleep- under-the-desk stage, the team learns the highs and the lows of the
business. This is what we mean by genuine situational learning. Only AIE
offers this pathway into games.
